Bole is a coloured, very refined, fine clay that is used as the immediate surface the gold foil is placed on..The soft and supple nature of armenian bole also allows the burnishing of gold leaf to a high shine with an agate stone. Armenian bole does not contain any glue, therefore it is necessary to prepare a solution of rabbit glue (1 L of 8-10% glue to for about 300 ml of Armenian bole) for application. The mixture must be spread in a thin layer on the surface to be gilded.
